NORTH LIBERTY– Ron Stiers rarely leaves the house without donning a shirt that represents his favorite sport, Pickleball.
The rear window of his truck spells “USA Pickleball Association” in large lettering, and he has personalized cards that passes around to anyone he meets. For Stiers, it’s all for the love of the game.
“It’s the most popular sport that nobody’s ever heard of,” Stiers said.

ELY– The Annual Community Polka Festival will be held Sunday, Aug. 18, at the Ely American Legion Hall, 1545 Main St., Ely. This is a fundraiser for St. Luke’s Child Protection Center.
The event will begin with a Polka Service of worship at 10:30 a.m. at the legion hall led by Pastor Erika Uthe of the sponsoring church, St. John Lutheran, ELCA of Ely. It will be followed by a meal from 11:45 a.m. until 1 p.m. Activities and a dance will follow until 3 p.m.

SOLON– The Solon Athletic Booster Club will be sponsoring the 13th annual Booster Bash Golf Outing on Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Lake Macbride Golf Course. This year’s fundraising proceeds will be used to purchase a new set of weight racks for the weight room.
The tournament will be a four-person scramble (best shot) with two sessions– 7:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.. The cost is $50 per person. Anyone interested in registering individually or a group should call Lake Macbride Golf Course at 319-624-2500.

JOHNSON COUNTY– Maybe they didn’t get the memo. Perhaps they couldn’t believe that a tax could actually expire.
Whatever the reason, some retailers in Johnson County are still charging the one-cent Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) for flood relief. The tax, passed by voters in May 2009, was to be in effect for four years and ended on June 30. Iowa City, Lone Tree, Oxford, Solon, University Heights, Hills, Swisher, Tiffin and Shueyville voters approved the tax while residents of North Liberty, West Branch and Coralville rejected it.

Babygarten starts new session Friday, Sept. 6

Babygarten will be starting up again on Friday, Sept. 6, and meet for six weeks through Friday, Oct. 11. The program will be from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. on Fridays and is designed for children ages newborn through 24 months and their caregivers. Each week there will be rhymes, songs, and time for free play. Registration is required, and is limited to 15. Call the library to register soon.
