Chicken ordinance gains some ground

Council passes first reading

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty City Council is ready for chickens… with reservations.
After a lot of talking, a little squawking and considerable balking, the council approved the first reading of an ordinance that will allow certain residents to keep chickens in town.
Parts of an urban chicken ordinance have been scratched out and rewritten several times in the last few months, but staff presented changes last Tuesday, Aug. 12, that three councilors could live with, at least for awhile.

Hawk Talk

The is the second part of a three-part series on the Hawkeye football team.
Last week I talked about the offensive line, tight ends, wide receivers and fullbacks. This week I’ll talk about quarterbacks, running backs and the defensive line. I’ll also pick who I think will be the starting quarterback for the Hawkeyes.

No matter who starts at quarterback, Iowa must have a strong running game to set up the play-action pass.
For the first time since Shonn Greene played in 2009, the Hawks should have some talent and depth at running back.

Beverly A. “Bev” Yoder, 77, of Iowa City, died Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, at Windmill Manor in Coralville. Funeral Services were held Aug. 17 at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City. Pastor Barie Tritle officiated. The eulogy was written by Jan Dougherty and was read on her behalf at the service. Burial followed at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to First United Methodist Church, Iowa City Hospice or Hospice Compassus– for their Music Therapy Program.

Thomas W. “Tom” Trent, 86, of West Liberty, died Friday, Aug. 9, 2013, at Crestview Care Center in West Branch.
Funeral services were held Aug. 12 at the Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Burial with military honors followed at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Erwin Steffen

Erwin G. Steffen, 63, of Dyersville, died Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, at his home in Dyersville surrounded by his family. Services were held Aug. 16 at the Basilica of St. Francis Xavier in Dyersville, with the Rev. Dennis Quint officiating. Burial was in St. Francis Cemetery in Dyersville.


Dean Rodgers

Dean Charles Rodgers died Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, at his home near Wellman at the age of 68 years.
He is survived by his wife, Jan; two children, Steven Duane (Colleen) Rodgers and Dena Diane (Cameron) Davis, all of Wellman; nine grandchildren, Everett, Hazel, Henry, Wendell, Oliver and a baby Rodgers, due in January, Caleb, Cole and Sidney Davis; a sister, Vernene (Gary) Lenz of Glyndon, Md.; and four brothers, Blaine (Gayle) Rodgers of Denver, Colo., Wayne (Marylou) Rodgers of Mount Pleasant, Richard (Mwansa) Rodgers of Tiffin and Allen Rodgers of Winfield.


Dwight Marine

On Wednesday, July 24, 2013, Dwight H. Marine died at his home in Amherst, Mass. after a two-year struggle with cancer.
Dwight Howard Marine was born Oct. 6, 1955, in Iowa City to Mabel Elizabeth Coxon Marine and the late Leroy Donald Marine. He graduated from Lone Tree Community High School; Kirkwood Community College; and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Dwight worked for the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority for over a quarter of a century and his final position was that of supervisor.


Kelly Liddell and Troy Liddell

The families and friends of Kelly and Troy Liddell have once again come together; this time under the most tragic circumstances following an accident that took their lives away from all of us Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013. These same families and friends have rallied, supported, cried, laughed and will go on because of the beautiful lives of Kelly and Troy.
Visitation and services were held Aug. 18 at Parkview Evangelical Church in Iowa City. Kelly and Troy touched many lives.


George Hoffner

George C. Hoffner, 98, of Clarence, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, at the Clarence Nursing Home. Services were held Aug. 16 at Chapman Funeral Home in Clarence, with the Rev. David Mears officiating. Burial was in Clarence Cemetery, with military honors.
Survivors include daughters, Nancy (Clarence) Parker of Richardson, Texas and Carol Cherryholmes of North Liberty; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a half sister, Dorothy Heinke of Cedar Rapids.

Florence M. Fuhrmeister, 97, formerly of rural North Liberty, died Friday, Aug. 9, 2013, after a lengthy illness at Lantern Park Nursing and Rehab Center in Coralville. Memorial services were held Aug. 14 at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Family graveside services were at Ridgewood Cemetery in North Liberty.
