Clean sweep

Solon XC boys, girls and JV all win at Tipton

TIPTON– The cold and rain were certainly not welcome, but the results made it worth the soggy wait for Solon runners and fans at the Tipton Invitational Cross Country Meet Sept. 8.
Solon came home with wins in not only the varsity girls’ and boys’ race, but both junior varsity (JV) events, as well.
The coaches call that hard work and reaching a goal.

Solon picks up wins at home quad

1-2 at Linn-Mar

SOLON– They bested Huskies and Tigers, but had trouble with Lions and Cougars.
Solon’s varsity volleyball squad went 2-1 at a home quad meet Sept. 10 and 1-2 at a Linn-Mar tourney Sept. 12. If you toss out the 3-0 sweep at the hands of the top-ranked (3A) Mount Vernon Mustangs to start the week, the team notched a .500 mark.
The Spartans stayed close with the No. 1 Mustangs in Mount Vernon, falling 25-18, 25-14 and 25-18.
“We did a good job of shutting down their big hitter, we just made too many mistakes,” observed Solon Head Coach Jeff Walker.

Spartans deliver Stanton’s first win in downpour

Solon puts Knights to sleep, 42-0

LA PORTE CITY– As the heavens gushed, the Solon varsity football team delivered Head Coach Lucas Stanton his first win helming the Spartans with a 42-0 victory over the Union Community Knights, on Friday, Sept. 11, in La Porte City.
In the fashion of history past, the Spartans used the elements to their advantage, keeping the ball on the ground while rain hammered the players and field, leaning on their offensive and defensive linemen for protection.

Football players used intolerable language at LaPorte City

District letters posted to SCSD website

SOLON– Solon football players used inappropriate language during a Sept. 11 game against Union High School in LaPorte City.
According to a post on the school’s website, Union football coaches and administrators were made aware of “inappropriate statements” directed toward Union football players.
The post included two letters– one penned by Solon High School Principal Zach Wigle and Activities Director Casey Hack– and the other signed by Union High School’s principal and assistant principal.

Three positive cases

SCSD adds COVID dashboard to website

SOLON– So far, so good for the young but already tumultuous school year.
Solon Community School District (SCSD) classes began Monday, Aug. 31, and as of Friday, Sept. 11, three positive cases among students were reported.
The district placed a COVID-19 dashboard on its website under the “District Return to Learn” menu, tracking positive tests for students and staff, as well as absenteeism and quarantine numbers.

Sex, drugs and fishing licenses

Billerbeck shares the darker side of patrolling for the DNR in new book

SOLON– A lot of people think of a game warden as the friendly officer checking fishing licenses.
And while partially true, there’s another side to the job that’s not as family-friendly, according to Erika Billerbeck.
Billerbeck, of Solon, recounted some of the grittier true-life tales from her career as an Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) law enforcement officer in her newly-published memoir, “Wildland Sentinel: Field Notes from an Iowa Conservation Officer.”

Barkers again lead the way for CCA XC

Brandon wins for varsity boys, Haidyn leads varsity girls with runner-up finish at Benton Community Invitational

WILLIAMSBURG– The Williamsburg Sports Complex was “home” for Benton Community’s invitational cross country meet on Saturday, Sept. 12, due to derecho damage. The field of competitors expanded as Clear Creek Amana (CCA) became a late addition due to its own weather issue, namely, a Thursday, Sept. 10, rainout in Fairfield.

Creek Girls sweep the Bobcats, 3-0

Clubb leads CCA past Benton Community with 11 kills in WaMaC West win

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity volleyball team improved to 5-1 on the season with a 3-0 sweep of the visiting Benton Community Bobcats Tuesday, Sept. 8, in Tiffin.
The Clippers held off the Bobcats for a 25-17 first-set win, overpowered them, 25-15, in the second, and dominated, 25-12, in the third. Junior Calia Clubb led the Creek Girls with 11 kills, while freshman Bliss Beck produced nine and senior Hailey Pollock made eight.

Creek Boys fall in rainy slog against the Saints

CR Xavier Catholic tops Clear Creek Amana, 30-7

CEDAR RAPIDS– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity football team dipped to 1-2 on the season as they fell 30-7 to undefeated (3-0) Cedar Rapids Xavier Catholic Friday, Sept. 11, at Saints Field.
The Creek Boys caught a lucky break halfway through the first quarter when the Saints fumbled the ball on a third-and-goal, and Mark Gorbatenko recovered for the Clippers. Unfortunately, the ensuing Clipper drive failed, and the period ended in a 0-0 stalemate.

Creek Girls go 3-1 in West’s Caroline Found VB tourney

CCA hosts annual memorial event

TIFFIN– Due to the Iowa City Community School District conducting 100 percent online classes, all sports and other extra-curricular events are on hold until the district resumes at least 50 percent on-site education. Because of this, the annual Caroline Found Invitational Volleyball Tournament, hosted by Iowa City West High in honor of Found, a West High student and volleyball standout who died in a moped accident in 2011, was in jeopardy of being cancelled.
